SOLWAY'S INTERNET SEARCH
v1.3
Copyright (c) Kevin Solway 1997
A small and fast FREEWARE program enabling you to search up to
FOUR search engines simultaneously and display the results on
one screen (provided that your web browser can handle frames),
or up to NINE search engines in multiple full-screen windows.
Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
Usage:
* Install the program by running the SETUP program. (This
will ensure that CTL3DV2.DLL gets copied to the Windows
system directory)
* Specify the location of your web browser by editing the
BROWSER= line in the SSEARCH.INI file. You don't need to
do this if this program is already communicating properly
with your browser. Don't surround your file name in
quotes (") if you are using Windows 3.1, but do so if you
are using Windows 95.
* Works with both Netscape and Explorer.
* You can select up to four search engines to search at a
time, and you can choose to display the search results
in grid format, or in rows, or columns, or each search
engine in a separate browser window (Select, "grid",
"rows", "cols" or "wins").
*** You may select to search *all* of the search engines so
long as you want to view the results from each in separate
browser windows (ie, "wins" is selected). Only with "wins"
selected will you be allowed to select more than four search
engines.
If you are using an older browser that does not facilitate
frames then you will have to select the "wins" option if you
want to search more than one search engine at a time.
The 32 bit Internet Explorer does not support the new window
"wins" feature.
* Type the words to search for and press the Enter key or click
the Search button to begin the search.
If you want to find words only in a particular order then
enclose them in quotation marks. For example, "English
football". Some search engines ignore the quotations marks.
* Check "Ontop" to make the window stay on top of all
other windows. Uncheck it to make the window behave like
normal.
* Click on the small tab button next to the Search button
to shrink the window to a smaller size. Click again to
expand to normal size.
* The small squares at the bottom left of the window are
for moving the window around the screen.
* The last 30 search strings are stored in the drop down list.
* Right click on the window border to automatically load a
preset URL into your browser. The default setting loads
a sample start page from your hard disk. You can alter
the RIGHTCLICKURL= setting in the SSEARCH.INI file to point
to either a remote URL or a local file.
For example, a remote URL
RIGHTCLICKURL="http://www.ozemail.com.au/~ksolway"
or a local file on your hard disk (loads faster!)
RIGHTCLICKURL="file://f|\tpw\search\astart.htm"
(Note the "|" character used instead of the ":",
following the drive letter. And don't use the
quotes around the filename unless you are using
Windows 95)
To disable this right click feature completely make the
following adjustment:
RIGHTCLICKURL=0
Make sure you don't edit the .INI file while the program is
running, or your changes will not take effect.
* This program works very well with the Brian McArty's TRAYICON
program (for Windows 95 users)
* To bookmark a page which is displayed in a frame in Windows
95, don't use the hotkey, but right click on the page you want
to bookmark and select the option from the menu. Otherwise
you will only bookmark the Results.htm file.
* If you are using frames to display the search results you can
resize the frames by dragging them just as you would resize a
window.
* When using Netscape I normally position the window at the
top right of the screen, with the screen in small mode (by
clicking on the small tab) and with "Ontop" checked, where
it can stay without covering anything important.
